The Global Visitor Insurance is a health insurance for anyone up to and including the age of 79 and coming to The Netherlands for a short period. It does not matter whether you come over to visit family or friends, to travel or to work. The Global Visitor Insurance can also be taken out for a temporary visit of foreign business customers.

When do I need health insurance for the Netherlands??

If you are coming to the Netherlands to visit family or friends, to work or are just travelling through, it is advisable to take out good health insurance. The Global Visitor Insurance is the solution.

Based on European agreements, everyone who needs a so-called Schengen or MVV visa for The Netherlands must be adequately insured for urgent medical costs and repatriation. Global Visitor Health Insurance complies with the requirements for Schengen / MVV visa.

If you do not need a Schengen / MVV visa, it may be possible that you are already sufficiently insured. Whether the insurance is necessary depends entirely on your situation. If you are adequately insured against medical expenses in your home country, and this coverage also applies abroad, you may not need a Global Visitor Insurance. You can inquire after this at your own health insurance company.

However, bear in mind that the cost level in the Netherlands may well be higher than in your home country, leaving you faced with unexpected costs. Global Visitor Insurance can protect you from these costs.

Existing ailments and complaints are excluded
"Ailments and complaints that already existed before or on the commencement date of the insurance are not insured and accordingly do not qualify for reimbursement. This does not only apply to ailments and/or complaints that you already know you have, but also to ailments and/or complaints of which you were unaware, but which nevertheless already existed."

For how long can I insure myself?

If you are younger than 70, you can take out the insurance for a maximum of 12 months. If you are between 70 and 79, the maximum term of the insurance is 6 months. It is important that you take out the insurance for the correct period. It is not possible to extend the insurance. You may however apply for a new insurance once your existing insurance expires. Existing ailments and complaints will however be excluded on the new commencement date. This accordingly includes complaints for which you were reimbursed during the first period insured. If you do not yet know how long you need the insurance for, we advise that you rather make it too long than too short. It is not possible to get a premium refund for the days you don't need the insurance.

Waiting for a residence permit

If you are waiting for a residence permit, we advise that you take out the insurance for as long as possible (e.g. one year). From the date that the residence permit is issued, you are obliged to sign on for Dutch national health insurance. You can terminate your Global Visitor Insurance from that date and will receive a refund of the surplus premium.

Hospitalisation on the insurance expiry date

If you are hospitalised on the insurance expiry date, the insurance company will continue to reimburse the costs of this admission for a further 30 days. This hospitalisation must obviously fall under the insurance coverage.

The insurance company will fully reimburse the medical expenses that you incur under the coverage of this insurance. Certain specific costs are however reimbursed up to a maximum. Any costs will be paid up to a maximum of € 500,000 per person. An excess applies.

You have coverage throughout the whole of Europe

The insurance provides coverage in Europe, including the Azores, the Canary Islands and Madeira, as well as in Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia and the whole of Turkey, however not in the country of origin (the country in which you resided before departing to the Netherlands and/or the country of which you hold nationality). During your stay in the Netherlands, you may therefore travel to one of the aforementioned countries. You will then be normally insured for medical expenses.

You have a compulsory excess

The excess depends on your age. If you are younger than 70, the excess is € 75 per person for each period insured. If you are between 70 and 79, the excess is € 150 per person for each period insured.

Global Visitor Insurance can only be applied for online. If you do not expect to be hospitalised and are otherwise healthy, you may assume that the insurance company will accept you for this insurance. If you pay with I-Deal you can print your policy within one hour. If you are not able to pay with I-Deal OOM Verzekeringen guarantees that the policy will be sent within five working days of the transfer of the premium to our bank account.
